Fondée en 1937 par le docteur Paul Marcus, médecin stomatologiste devenu marchand de tableaux anciens, la Galerie Marcus aura tenu boutique pendant soixante-dix ans dans le quartier des hôtels des ventes parisiens — d'abord rue Le Peletier, puis, après la guerre, au 20 rue Chauchat, où elle est restée jusqu'à sa radiation officielle en 2007.
Spécialisée dans la peinture ancienne — flamande, hollandaise, française et italienne du XVIIe au XVIIIe siècle — la galerie s'est imposée plus tard comme l'une des grandes défenseuses du trompe-l'œil en France, organisant aux côtés de la Délégation à l'Action artistique de la Ville de Paris plusieurs expositions qui, dans les années 1980 et 1990, ont contribué à faire redécouvrir ce genre au grand public.
Paul Marcus la dirigea pendant cinquante-six ans, jusqu'à sa mort en 1993 ; son fils Claude-Gérard, élu député de Paris en 1968, lui avait succédé comme directeur commercial dès 1961, partageant son temps entre la Chambre et la galerie.
Des œuvres ayant transité par la maison sont aujourd'hui conservées dans les collections publiques de Paris, Strasbourg, Montpellier et Tarbes — et figurent dans l'inventaire des Musées de France.
Founded in 1937 by Dr. Paul Marcus, a stomatologist turned dealer in old master paintings, Galerie Marcus held its premises for seventy years in the Parisian auction-house district — first on rue Le Peletier, then, after the war, at 20 rue Chauchat, where it remained until its formal closure in 2007.
Specializing in old master paintings — Flemish, Dutch, French and Italian, 17th and 18th centuries — the gallery later became one of France's foremost champions of trompe-l'œil, organizing alongside the City of Paris's Délégation à l'Action artistique several exhibitions which, in the 1980s and 1990s, brought this genre back to the wider public.
Paul Marcus ran it for fifty-six years, until his death in 1993; his son Claude-Gérard, elected member of parliament for Paris in 1968, had succeeded him as commercial director as early as 1961, dividing his time between the National Assembly and the gallery.
Works that passed through the house are today held in the public collections of Paris, Strasbourg, Montpellier and Tarbes — and listed in the inventory of the Musées de France.

The gallery's history begins well before 1937. From the grandfather Marcus, director of the hospital in Grodno in the Russian Empire, to the father Jules — émigré doctor and decorated officer — the family first lived from medicine. With Paul, the son, art becomes the second profession; with Claude-Gérard, the grandson, it joins forces with politics.

A 1928 graduate of the Paris Faculty of Medicine, he first served as medical sub-lieutenant during the Rif War in Morocco, then went to the United States where he combined hospital work with an apprenticeship as an antiquaire at the Galerie Demotte. Returning to Paris, he founded the Galerie Marcus in 1937. During the Second World War, barred from practice by the Vichy Statute on Jews, he joined the Resistance in the South under the pseudonym Médecin Capitaine Bernard. After the war, he devoted his life to scholarship and the trade in old master paintings, working with numerous French and foreign museums, and became one of the leading champions of trompe-l'œil in France.

A graduate of Sciences Po (Paris), the École du Louvre, and the Chambre Syndicale des Experts Professionnels, and an expert in old master paintings, he succeeded his father as commercial director of the gallery in 1961. Elected member of parliament for Paris in 1968, he kept his seat until 1997 and was mayor of the 10th arrondissement from 1983 to 1989. Co-founder of the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme — of which he was president until 2001 — he led, like his father, a life on two fronts: the gallery and public life.
